Paul Blackford - 1992

The first track sets the standard and pace of things to come – the dramatically titled ‘Fist Of The North Star’ is certainly one for the dancefloor. If you’ve seen Paul play out recently you will instantly recognise this – it is Radioactive Man/RGC style electrobassbreaks – stripped down, dirty and uncompromising. Vintage Blackford.

‘Dub Conspiracy’ is the nod to the old skool that the EP’s title alludes to. The next track ‘Simple Things’ starts off understated and hooks you in with interesting changes based around a single loop. ‘Hijack’ responds with more energy, bouncing basslines and sirens with Paul’s special recipe to bring it bang up to date.

‘Microcosm’ sees a change in direction with a much richer analogue sound and a lovely staccato beat roll. The old skool sensibilities of the previous tracks are replaced with precision electronics not dissimilar to the darker Lowfish/Solvent/Suction Recs output.

The 1992 EP is a progession from the 1991 EP, rather than being a continuation of the same theme. The old skool references are still there but so are other more intricate and varied influences.

Paul has released a lot of stuff on Net Labels recently (Audio Aubergine andElectrotoxic) and much of it is free to download.

New Order - Acid House Remixes by 808 State (1988)

The latest release from Rephlex is a rediscovered pair of remixes from Acid House godfathers 808 State. This is Rephlex continuing to bring the lost music of yesteryear to the masses – what they began with the release of the Black Devil EPs, Rephlex are pushing further with this release. And it makes for interesting listening…

The ‘So Hot Mix’ of Blue Monday is a 303-laden remix of New Order’s timeless track. A new mix of this track is always worth a listen and this is no exception. It sounds light on bass by today’s standards but still bears up to multiple playthroughs. The production is unmistakably 808 State and it still sounds fresh despite being 20 years old. Always a classic track and this mix will be sure to draw widespread appeal.

The ‘Acid House Mix’ of Confusion is perhaps the more interesting track on this 12″. I’m not familiar with the original track (again by New Order) but the remix has a meaty synth line which is looped more-or-less throughout, whilst the acid line bubbles teasingly below the surface.

Overall – a “must have” for acid house fans and a welcome first airing of remixes from the 808 State archive.

Knifehandchop - How I Left You

Hailed as the first album ‘proper’ from Canada’s Knifehandchop, ‘How I Left You’ is more or less a honed-down version of the furiously cut-up, genre-bending live act. Knifehandchop is known for his killer live sets fusing hip hop with gabba, drum n’ bass, booty, ragga and just about any other style that you can think of.

The first track, the bizarrely titled Going Back To Scarborough kicks things off at hip hop tempo with a vocal line sampled from S.T.I.L.L. DRE – a classic from Dr Dre’s Chronic 2001 album. The KHC interpretation has an almost moving quality to it, whilst remaining true to its bouncing hip hop beginnings.

Other standout tracks include We Used To Make Love with it’s squeaky analogue rhythms, hard break beat and a deep-as-you-like bassline – the “breakdown” is pure 4:4 bang with a rephlexian melody that kicks in half way through. Girlfriend is another surefire classic – bad bass, some quick break beats, distorted vocals then a nice little piano-come-synth line – ultimately of course there is the welcome dissent into gabba and the culmination of all these elements for the grand finale!

The last track – 94 Hardcore is quintessential Knifehandchop – noisier and darker than most of the album with punishing beats and a happy hardcore bounce.

If you are looking for an album which is diverse and doesn’t take itself too seriously then you should buy this album now. Of course, you should also have a penchant for gabba and a less-brain-more-bang outlook on life. Personally, I got hooked on KHC at this year’s Dedbeat Festival and haven’t looked back.

Unbelievable to think that this was Lowfish’s first ever UK gig – a sign of the times if ever there was one that London’s electronic music fans are all to often fobbed off with substandard nights with the same old tired guests. Unfortunately it is a sad reality that the majority of venues and promoters are only interested in the money side and that more time and thought isn’t put into booking guests. As a result it’s left up to the enthusiasts to front their own money in order to put on the artists that they really want to see. Everyone is guilty of being slack and not turning up to quality nights but it’s a case of there being so many nights on yet very little in the way of quality. Come on ravers, bring on the Robot Renaissance!

The guest of honour – Lowfish – mainly played tracks from his recent album 1000 Corrections Per Second (Suction Records). From the melodic Fric Frac to the intricate tones of Air Of Supremacy and the haunting title track from the album. The culmination was the techno assault of Photo Distintegration and the dynamite that is Around The Neck. I think I also heard Dark Matter from The Accident Causer (Ersatz Audio) but I could be wrong! Melodic, haunting, intricate, banging – that’s the Lowfish live set.

I’m sure everyone who was there will agree that Lowfish played an awesome set on Thursday – a real treat. Just a shame there weren’t more people there to appreciate it – you really did miss out.

Long time Robot Music guest and friend Paul Blackford, played a much-anticipated set showcasing his new musical direction. Not a million miles away from the old skool tinged/bass heavy sound lifted from the 1991 EP but showing a more forward-thinking and electro-orientated approach.

Ever the showman, Cursor Miner – obviously inspired by the artwork for his new album Cursor Miner Plays God (Lo Recordings) – shared the stage with a rather attractive ‘synthetic lady’. The highlights had to be Library, Sport Of Kings, Grillin’ The Cheese, War Machine plus his blinding version of Alone, Together by The Strokes.

Providing tactical DJ support were Robot Music residents Braiken, Smilex and Bolus, plus the Lo Recordings sound system.
