DELTA 9 Plastics Label Launch – 10 September 2004

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came down to the DELTA 9 Plastics label launch at Electrowerkz on 10th September, held in conjunction with Rebel Bass. We really enjoyed hosting the bar, there was a fantastic atmosphere and some truly excellent music.

Sparkle kicked things off with some hip-hop and abstract electronics. Smilex (coming straight from Bang Face)quickly upped the pace with some stripped-down techno and electronics.

Midnight saw Line take to the stage – armed with a mic, laptop and barrage of synths, controllers, and boxes with flashing LEDs. Line won the crowd with his unique blend of bouncy electro melodies, crispy beats and waves of noise punctuated by indie-inspired, bit-crushed vocals. An exceptional set and a rare London appearance from this promising artist, who we’re sure to hear a lot more about in the future.

Jimmy Bolus was next up, unleashing an assault of electro bass monsters, aimed straight at the eager party goers who lapped it up.

Debasser + DJ Andrew Lane worked the dancefloor up into an even bigger frenzy with a super tight Final Scratch/MPC set, which built to a dramatic climax when they dropped Debasser’s own Dark Smile.

Just as it looked like the crowd was flagging DJ SP fired up the rave with some rinsing jungle classics. With basslines bouncing off every wall, the punters were powerless to resist.

DJ Braiken followed with more dancefloor bangers, before him, SP and Bolus wound things up with a back to back to back finale.

Special thanks go to everyone who helped make the night such a success: Matt @ Hyponik, Dave @ Alt*Ctrl, Olli @ Lo, Frisky Fingers, James Webb, Neil Wells, Electrowerkz staff for being so helpful and Bolus for all his efforts.

There were tears of joy, shame and straightforward physical pain as 8 DELTA 9 affiliated teams battled it out for sporting supremacy at Shoreditch Park. In the interests of equality all teams were mixed. Surprise winners ‘Cut The Mustard’ walked away with the trophy after battling AFC Hyponik in a dramatic final.

Special thanks of course go to Bolus for making it all happen. Here are the results (and some impartial observations):

Unbelievable to think that this was Lowfish’s first ever UK gig – a sign of the times if ever there was one that London’s electronic music fans are all to often fobbed off with substandard nights with the same old tired guests. Unfortunately it is a sad reality that the majority of venues and promoters are only interested in the money side and that more time and thought isn’t put into booking guests. As a result it’s left up to the enthusiasts to front their own money in order to put on the artists that they really want to see. Everyone is guilty of being slack and not turning up to quality nights but it’s a case of there being so many nights on yet very little in the way of quality. Come on ravers, bring on the Robot Renaissance!

The guest of honour – Lowfish – mainly played tracks from his recent album 1000 Corrections Per Second (Suction Records). From the melodic Fric Frac to the intricate tones of Air Of Supremacy and the haunting title track from the album. The culmination was the techno assault of Photo Distintegration and the dynamite that is Around The Neck. I think I also heard Dark Matter from The Accident Causer (Ersatz Audio) but I could be wrong! Melodic, haunting, intricate, banging – that’s the Lowfish live set.

I’m sure everyone who was there will agree that Lowfish played an awesome set on Thursday – a real treat. Just a shame there weren’t more people there to appreciate it – you really did miss out.

Long time Robot Music guest and friend Paul Blackford, played a much-anticipated set showcasing his new musical direction. Not a million miles away from the old skool tinged/bass heavy sound lifted from the 1991 EP but showing a more forward-thinking and electro-orientated approach.

Ever the showman, Cursor Miner – obviously inspired by the artwork for his new album Cursor Miner Plays God (Lo Recordings) – shared the stage with a rather attractive ‘synthetic lady’. The highlights had to be Library, Sport Of Kings, Grillin’ The Cheese, War Machine plus his blinding version of Alone, Together by The Strokes.

Providing tactical DJ support were Robot Music residents Braiken, Smilex and Bolus, plus the Lo Recordings sound system.

Public Life literally a shit-hole but what a banger. This was to be the official formation of the Union of Bang Face. Would it live up to the hype? Would Kevin Hill and Jan Ulrich turn up? Would St. Acid go the way of Samson? Was it Lesson 8 or would it be a lesson in hate? I turned up at 8:30 but left aching and feeling thirty.

Walked straight into T. ‘Maximo Bondini’ Smilex and some fucking snails. The perfect mix of softcore facecore and full-on slime-porn. The ideal warm-up for a night of post-modern blasphemy. After catching SARS in Rome, Big T. truly MDMazed us all. Next stop, the 2004 Native Instruments workshop in Hemsby. T. M. B. Smilex then promptly left to remain alert for Church the next day.

Next up were Jimmy ‘Zinger’ Bolus and Roboy Braiken. Were they out to fool us or were they just fakin’? No. These boys truly put the Bang into Bang Face. With a combination of Homemade Nail-Bomb Electro and Post-Industrial Revolution Regeneration Techno, I felt the first symptoms of ExBaFRaS (Extreme Bang Face Re-appropriation Syndrome). My eyes filled with wax, my ears smelt trouble, my tongue fixed of the DJs and my nose grabbed something hard. That something belonged to a giant German looking man with a sock on his head.

As my fears increased, up stepped Suzie Sparkle. It was the first ‘proper’ music I’d heard for years. Fuck Braindance, I danced. Remarkable Sparkle reminded us that just because you are in a trendy slum in London, you can actually hear good music. Crazy! We also got our first glimpse of the ravehorn as a flash of luminous orange lit up the disused public toilet like a distress flare. The rave officially started and the birth of Neo-Rave had begun.

The time for the gospel according to St. Paul of the Black Ford had come. An onslaught of bass driven ghetto slang boomeranged Bang to Face and Bang again. It was as though Face had fallen from grace and been served up like a kebab outside the High Society in Staines. The crowd showed their appreciation for this live performance by one of the UKs freshest Bang Beaters. The ravers began to ‘loos’ control and the euphoria became increasingly hysteric. Big up the B.

One o’clock, what a cock! What’s that on his head? What’s that shit on his T-shirt? Hang on a minute… I recognise that noise! One time for the foghorn! Oi Oi! Bring the noise! What’s that mate? Bang Face! Bang my Face more like. Bang my Face you fat cunt! Blimey! Steady on mate.

Saint Acid blew my face of, straight off. I started swapping faces, for a laugh, with a bunch of random ravers I’d never met. We took it in turns to bang each other’s faces before we passed them on. I saw the tall German guy’s face on the floor. A man was stamping on it shouting “Bang Face”. I think his name was Bolus. Saint Acid was shouting “Bang Face”. I’ve never heard music played like that before. It was like the Dissolution of the Monasteries meets the Second Summer of Love. The combination of Ragga Gabber Bang Beat Facecore blew me away. The sound of the foghorn made me feel like I was a General leading an army into battle. I felt like I was being swallowed into a whirlpool with an octopus stuck to my head. I loved it.

I’m not sure what was harder, the music or keeping up. Just when I thought it was over, it wasn’t. Cries of “One more fatso” brought me to my senses like a Vicks inhaler up each nostril. One more fatso became ten more as the rave heaved and pulsed out of control for another hour. As I stumbled outside, I noticed the time – 3:03am. Suddenly it all made sense. Forgive me Father, I sinned but I will sin again when the call comes.

Robot Music: Bang Face – 22 August 2003

After an “accidental” fire at a neighbouring furniture shop, Hackney lost the District and, with it, the only decent DJ bar in the area and, with that, Hackney’s best monthly helecttrobass/Junglestep-TechRave. For RaveTap it was the loss of a spiritual home and the beginning of a search for pastures new.

Where better for Robot Music to re-capture the spirit of the District than at its sister-bar The White Horse in Brixton which proudly boasts 4 structurally sound walls and an intact roof. DJ Braiken was missing due to holiday commitments but standing in were two antipodean Robot Music debutants…

First to lay down was Hekaman – he warmed the crowd with some slower tempo electronic pleasantries. Despite monitoring issues, Big H’s performance was a lesson in highest quality electro and seamless mixing – truly, that shit was the tightest thing to come from down under since Peter Andre’s mid-riff.

Next stepped up Master Atreides and quite literally. Standing on a crate to better manipulate the records and work the mixer, Atreides upped the ante and pushed the tempo on a notch. Playing a mixture of cutting edge future sound and classic cuts the transition from down-tempo melodics to jacking bangbeat was as deft as his work on the fader. Sick.

With that the way was paved for T.Smilex to play what he would describe as a “down-tempo-less-in-yer-face” dance-floor style. From what was on show it was “less-in-your-face” in the way that you would compare being hit in the eye with a hammer as opposed to a brick and “down-tempo” as in less than 180 bpm. This vibrant set led to some some movement on the floor and was met with elation by a contingent of wide-eyed, gurnsters who simply couldn’t get enough of the T. Top drawer stuff and some nice scratches.

With the bar beginning to buzz it was time for Jimmy Bolus to nice up the floor with a set tailor-made for the carnival-goers. The Bang Face Carnival that is. With whiplash-inducing bass and fierce breaks cut-up with 4/4 stompers who needs dancing policemen and stab-wounds? A solid performance with those expected elements of spice. Pressure.

With the dance-floor quickly filling, it was time for Saint Acid to take over the controls and for Bang to take over the punter’s Faces. It did. There followed an hour long assault of Jungle-inspired neo-rave which sent the crowd into a dancing frenzy which even the bar staff couldn’t resist. The pace was unrelenting and the up-front mixing style uncompromising, punctuated by bursts from a horn of some description. The Saint wound things down to cheers and cries of “one more” that continued a full 25 minutes after he’d packed up and left… Truly an awesome nasty.

To sum up – a good comeback for Robot Music at what will hopefully be a regular venue and some new faces well and truly banged.

Robot Music: Rise of the Machines

Thanks to everyone that came down on one of the hottest days of the year to represent the Robot. It was an entertaining and slightly over-warm evening of electro & beer. We celebrated two birthdays – those of Debb (Cheshunt Cru) and Henrietta (FemTap) and mourned the absence of the Sisters Reeves who might as well have built the RaveBot themselves (now residing in Prague – the city widely acknowledged as the birthplace of the robot – read Karel Capek’s 1921 play Rossum’s Universal Robots).

Tim Competent kicked the evening off with a refreshing set consisting of electro, house and techno – skillfully mixed with some old favourites in there as well as the latest bangers. Expect big things from Robot Music’s newest associate.

Next up came Braiken with a new direction – traditional electro merged with Techno/House and 21st Century bleep.

Bolus was next – pioneering the Step-Tech sound and reminding the punters that it’s still fresh the way Jimmy B serves it.

Smilex wrapped up the evening with a banging blend of techno, electro and booty floorshakers. The perfect antidote to a hot & sweaty bar in the depths of Essex Road.

All in all a successful evening for all involved – fun from start to finish and no stray bullets to moan about. If you didn’t make it down then you’ll just have to keep wondering what might have been – Robot Music will not be returning to this venue. Why? Because we’ve got bigger fish to fry.
