 From
the rephlex site:
"Originally released on Out Records way back in 1978,
Black Devil's "Disco Club" is an extremely rare
disco masterpiece, an epic journey into the deepest electronic
disco...discovered by Rephlex's own PP Roy for 20 pence at
a car boot sale, and quickly found favour with friends Richard
D. James and Luke Vibert."
The EP contains four predominantly instrumental tracks from
the original release, a second 12" will follow with two
vocal tracks and a remix from Kerrier District (aka Luke Vibert).
In musical terms 'Disco Club' is certainly a rare find -
it sounds like nothing else, loosely falling into the disco
category, probably more by era than content. Heavy psychedelic
influences are developed through tribal drums, electro-esque
synths and muffled vocal samples. It's futuristic but in a
very retro way.
Sadly its let down by inferior 70s production, and it's hard
to see how its dull sounding drums and stifled bass could
cut it on a 21st century dancefloor. A great find at a car
boot sale definitely! But there's a few too many dated key
changes for this record to be the contemporary hit that Rephlex
are hyping it as. However it's an enticing and intriguing
slice of dancefloor history.
