EP REVIEW: NORMAL POSITION - BOYFRIENDS CAR EP (Deep-Water) - Released March 2004

Boyfriends Car - Normal Position's second solo release on Leicester based Deep-Water label - follows a highly acclaimed debut EP, UK tour and live appearances at The Big Chill and Essential Festival.

The EP kicks off with the title track - glitchy, up-beat electronica meets schoolyard vocals. Synth sounds sit happily alongside xylophones and guitar samples. Involved beat programming and a diverse range of sounds create a 2-step rhythm.

'Gobby' involves surprisingly clever reconstruction of noises made from the human mouth! This is a bouncy, cheerful excursion with a nice melody, which continues the eccentric theme and weird range of noises from the first track.

On the flip we have a definite change of mood with 'Koikoi Pips' - a lovely micro acoustic number with a dream-like quality. Again, there is an unusual mix of instruments including Spanish guitar and children's toys, plus Normal Position's favourite xylophone sound!

'Koikoi Pips' is followed by arguably the highlight of the EP. 'Chewits' is perhaps less eccentric than previous tracks but its lush melodic sweeps, bleeps, rich synths, and stretched vocal snatches give it a deep atmospheric ambience.

Normal Position cover a lot of ground with this EP with clever use of instruments and skilled manipulation of sounds. Strong, optimistic melodies hold these compositions together. The only criticism would be that they have perhaps tried too hard to be quirky in order to differentiate their sound.
