LP REVIEW: RADIOACTIVE MAN - BOOBY TRAP (RGC)

Keith Tenniswood returns here with his second long-player for Rotters Golf Club under his Radioactive Man guise. Its predecessor was considered one of the best UK electro records ever, with it's sublime melodies, nasty breakbeats and skull-crushing bass. Tenniswood has admitted that he felt under pressure to deliver a superior follow-up, and after a couple of listens it becomes obvious that 'Booby Trap's selection of dancefloor bombs and slower-paced curiosities surpasses his first album in many respects.

1st track 'Suddenly Projected' kicks things off at a hip-hop tempo with minimal synth lines and chopped up vocal samples declaring 'Everybody is talking about Radioactive Man'. This leads nicely into the curiously titled 'See You Next Tuesday' which picks the speed up, adding a bouncy bassline to funky electro beats.

'Airlock' is one of the highlights of the album and a live favourite. A beautiful string line gives way to a rock-solid gutteral bass, which pushes the tune along with help from some trademark RGC-flavoured breaks.

Another dancefloor killer is 'Twistyboomklart'. Taking it's inspiration from the punkier, booty-shaking tracks from the 'Dive And Lie Wrecked' EP, it consists of a 4-note descending bassline designed for big soundsystems, and beats that whizz past at ghetto-tech tempo.

Elsewhere 'Ruby Rage' takes a familiar Two Lone Swordsmen break, speeds it up and throws in the sound of malfunctioning studio equipment, 'Suitybloke' uses apocalyptic toms and growling bass to create the sound of Detroit techno given a UK breakbeat/electro overhaul, and 'Eat 'Em All' is a nasty hybrid of drum 'n' bass and electro.

Radioactive Man's debut album showcased his talents for atmospheric electronics and synth-driven floor-fillers. 'Booby Trap' elaborates on the RGC sound by incorporating influences from his breakbeat flavoured tracks for Fuel records and his poppier production work for Dot Allison (see album closer 'Fed-Ex to Muenchen' featuring Lali Puna vocalist Valerie Trebeljahr). Another classic album for RGC, and hopefully one that will be improved on yet again.
