EP REVIEW: SYNC 24 - DARKER SENSES (Touchin’ Bass)

With it’s latest release (No. 7), Touchin’ Bass is shaping up to be one of the best UK electro labels along with RGC and Breakin’.

Sync 24 is Philip Bolland, also one half of Cultek (another Touchin’ Bass outfit) and part of London’s long-running electro night Scand, and, as you’d expect, this EP is very, very dark.

Sense 1 takes a lo-fi distorted electro beat and some of the scariest synth lines this reviewer has ever heard, then whacks in some old-school bleeps on top for good measure. So far, so dark.

Sense 2 picks up the pace with a bassline straight out of the Electro Funk archives and those ghostly synths again. An absolutely immense b-line drops after the break. It’s got the attitood of Debasser and the well-produced sound of Drexyia: Dancefloor killer.

On the flip, Sense 3 starts off very atmospheric and as bit slower than what’s come before. Again, the most evil, disturbing sounds ride over the beats. If The Blair Witch Project had a soundtrack, this would be it.

Last track, Sense 4 gets harder and drops a more industrial beat with deep synths and growling breathy samples pushing the tune along. The industrial sounds are reminiscent of Dead Silence Syndicate material and the whole thing has a harsh, metallic texture.

This EP is sinister dancefloor material. No melodies or tuneful basslines, just pure dark dancefloor bombs. Ever seen Andrea Parker DJ at Lost? This is what it sounds like.
